Nepal Floods — Live Coverage

Nepal’s devastating flood disaster has entered a new phase as search-and-rescue operations continue following the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayas on August 26. According to the latest figures released by Nepal Police, the death toll has risen to 1,127, while 4,858 people remain missing, more than a week after the disaster. The scale of the tragedy has made it one of the country’s most serious recent natural disasters.

Rescue teams are focusing their efforts on mountainous areas and hydropower facilities hit by massive mudflows and debris. Around 900 hydropower workers are reportedly among the missing, with nearly 500 believed to be trapped inside tunnels buried under mud and rubble. More than 11,000 people have been rescued so far, while helicopters, excavators, drones and specialized teams continue working to reach isolated areas.

The destruction is complicating the rescue effort, with roads, bridges and communications networks severely damaged and an estimated 2.2 million tons of debris left across affected areas. Authorities are also searching for missing foreign nationals, including tourists and pilgrims, while DNA testing has begun to identify victims whose remains cannot be recognized. As rescue teams continue their operations, hopes of finding survivors are fading but the search remains ongoing.
